Celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an annual celebration in Aotearoa dedicated to promoting and strengthening the Māori language. This week is a vital part of the movement towards revitalising the Māori language, encouraging everyone in New Zealand - including those who call it home - to embrace the opportunity to ako (learn), korero (speak), waiata (sing), and pānui (read).

The theme for te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2024 is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’. This theme highlights the resilience, adaptability, and endurance of te reo, reflecting the commitment of New Zealanders to embrace and learn te reo Māori for generations to come.

Hays New Zealand is proud to join the movement to strengthen te reo Māori. Driven by Te Rōpū Manaaki, our Māori Inclusion Working Group, we have progressed several initiatives over the last year to embed te reo into the way we work. This included using bilingual key headings in our internal newsletters, incorporating te reo in our presentations, email signatures and in our internal job ads. We also launched Te Kupu Hou, The New Word, where each month our team across Aotearoa learns a new Māori word or phrase.

We’re proud to be continuing this initiative over the next financial year and we’d love you to watch the videos below that have been created by our team where they share their favourite kupu.

Join us in celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Kia kaha te reo Māori. Kia māhorahora te reo – let’s make it seen, let’s make it heard.
